2012 in IT what to expect?
2012 is going to be a whirlwind of change in the Technology sector. There are some things in the works that will change how we interact with machines and at the same time, there is a wind in the air of a unification of OS. In other words, one OS for all devices.
The main arenas however that I want to highlight, whether you want to agree with it or not, are these:
· Cloud is going to be the next business application, like it or not, it will become the business future according to Google and Microsoft, and that will be based on any platform (mobile, tablet, pc, laptop, netbook). Any company or IT department that is not making in-roads or preparing to new system to make it ready to move to the cloud is not a wise choice. Take a look at how many if the new servers are coming with cloud ready or even cloud preinstalled systems in them. The two articles below substantiate these. Sure there are security issues, but what about the security issues we have had with online banking? Today South Africans are using online banking excessively, but business is still too worried about having their stuff online. That just tells me that business is just too scared to change. There are ways to secure data on a cloud and there are ways to create private clouds on you own servers, it is only a matter of time before the head of the IT department arrives at our door step saying that some other directors in the company have been wowed by some “cool new cloud thingy” and why don’t we have it yet. Say what you like, cloud is here and here to stay.
· Mobile technologies have only one stumbling block, can the operators keep up with the new technologies being developed? From the tablet to the cell phone, all the companies are pushing mobile as a key component to success in 2012. Intel have this week announced a new chip that will compete with ARM, which means that the future cell phones are potentially going to have Intel inside, more will be announced at CES 2012. In the article below, you will notice that the new version of Windows Phone (Windows Phone 8) will be released at about the same time Windows 8 arrives. Not only that, it will have some of the same core tech that is in Windows 8. IT will also include IE10 which is going to be a part of Windows 8. That means that both the OS and the mobile OS are starting to merge into on OS for both sides. Windows 8 already has a massively reduced footprint, confirmed by many reports and independent sources around the web. Windows Phone OS will also be available on smaller non smart phone handsets next year as well.
· X-Box Kinect system is now going to be included into the next version of Windows. This means that Kinect user interface will be available for Windows and Microsoft Office. Many companies and industries are already using this system in their day to day business already. This system is currently being used in pensioners estates in Florida to help older people to keep their mobility, and in sporting arenas to help athletes with injuries to recuperate. Toyota are currently using this system in their shows to allow people to “fly” through all their cars and even explode the view of what the engine looks like inside. Medical surgeons are using this system to help accelerate their surgeries by keeping patient records and anatomy journals and medical manuals on hand during surgery.
· Siri voice recognition and Kinect voice recognition have both sparked a new range of applications and methods for you to work through your day. If Kinect Office works together with the voice recognition, our morning daily routine would consist of us talking to our email rather than typing it all in. Imagine getting to the office and as you walk into the office your pc will say, “Good Morning Jack, you have 10 emails, 17 Facebook notifications and 23 Tweets to respond to. Your wife has also emailed you, would you like me to read her email to you?”. Seems far off, but the take a look at the technology and the changes in the past 5 years and what is planned for this year ahead, yes it is possible.

I love the new Windows 8 interface, it is going to open the door to a uniplatform...
It took a bit of work and trial and error to get it running but it installs like a hot knife through butter! I used virtual box! Only a few virtual machines will work so check the Microsoft Dec blog first!
Remember to enable virtualization in your bios first! Big "DOH" move on my part!
At first the UI is a bit weird to work with, but once the live tiles start showing some data you will hate your boring old desk top. The best part of the new interface is how little time you spend clicking! It is wonderful. From the main screen you get a quick snapshot and when you click on that, it starts right into the app! The application also opens in full screen mode where you get the whole screen to view what you are doing. The new ribbon on Windows Explorer is also fantastic and everything is easy to reach. Finally, the task manager has had several improvements in how it presents data and what it shows you, which is awesome when you are looking at how much data or how hungry processes are. In a nutshell, it is wonderful, well done Microsoft. Next stop, installing office!

I used to love the success coach books of Tony Robbins, Norman Vincent Peale, Stephen Covey and yes, Zig Ziglar, until I read all the strategies and success techniques in a very unique place, the Bible. That is right. I have found everything I ever learnt from those success coaches in one almighty life changing and living book, which is the Living Word of God which we all know as the Bible. My favourite version is the NIV, but King James and the Amplified are just as good, I just had the NIV when I started. It was Jesus that showed me how to overcome many of the challenges I have been facing and in some cases, I was even given stuff that I did not know how to do.
Yes, what goes in is very important!

How much time do you spend doing stuff?
With the limited amount of time we have in a day, shouldn't we be more discerning with how we spend that time? If you believe that God Almighty is the creator of the universe and all that we know, then it would stand to reason that we should spend a large portion of our day asking Him for help and for answers to the many challenges we have in our day. However, society and the world has created such a spin bubble that life just does not seem to have enough time for God in it, but there is lots of time for other stuff that was not even there 10 years ago.
If you buy a new car, laptop, tablet or mobile phone, there is a handbook that comes with it. This hand book shows you have to optimally use your purchase and how to get the most value and enjoyment out of that purchase. If you were to fill up your car with sand or sugar, then your journey will be short and it will defiantly end with a very expensive mechanics bill at the end of it, and you will probably not even get there. Now consider that God Almighty created you and he has given you a body and mind and spirit to function. He even gave you a hand book to get the optimum enjoyment out of the life He has given you.
The question I am asking is, "What are you filling your tank with?".

South Africa may be classed as a third world, but believe it or not it sits quite far over on the Money GDP, but very low on the life expectancy. Notice where the arrow points to below.

| This is showing how the internet and connectivity is growing in South Africa. Many people are worried about the internet capacity in SA, but the truth is that there is so much internet coming that we will be as wired as any first world country in the very near future. I was blessed to be sitting next to a Telkom technician who let me know that there is some massive band with coming within the next couple of years from them. |

| This is the challenge our country faces. We have loads of connectivity, but too few people can afford connecting up. Statistics have proven that countries with more internet connection result in a better standard of living and longer life expectancy. |
| This slide was quite surprising, because we have all got so much to say against Eskom. While I agree with some of it, I also think that us South Africans are a bunch of complainers. Notice how South Africa is in the negative, but not half as bad as East Africa. Sometimes it takes statistics of the bigger picture to show us another perspective. |

| This statistic of South Africa shows that this country is actively using social media to its fullest. We may only have a 23% per capita who own computers and yet there are 14 million people on Mixit. Mixit is a primarily mobile environment which is predominantly used by kids. |

So which are leading the market? This is only the Q3 of 2011. | |

So what does all this mean, according to Emil Swanepoel? Well, it is showing us that the bulk of communication and networking is taking place over the mobile network on a mobile phone. This for the near future will be the fastest way to interact with people in Africa is via a cell phone. However, the communication stats show that this will be changing. It is now up to us to find the ways that this will be used and how or who is going to be the leaders to infiltrate Africa. Those people who are prepared to dig in and plough the foundation will be fortunate enough to be able to lay brand new foundations instead of using some old system that will need a lot of work to upgrade or use in conjunction. There was also a presentation of a pilot project that has been working right here in South Africa of how a class has been using Microsoft XBOX and Kinect to create a learning environment that has brought the students and teachers into the new era where the games on XBOX are being used to teach maths, science and even language. The pilot project is the first of its kind worldwide and the results are surprising about how much the kids have learnt. In November 2011, Microsoft officially announced that it will be releasing Kinect for Windows and Office in 2012. This means that we will be interacting with our computers using actions and gestures, using our bodies to navigate through our files. This is already being used in several industries around the world. Even surgeons are using this during a surgery, where they will gesture at a screen to flip through manuals or patient files when they need it. Toyota have created a virtual show room that expands and explodes cars to show you their interiors based on your hands and body gestures. In October 2011, Nokia announce their new range of Cell phones, with Windows Phone operating systems. They showed us how you can take a character from an XBOX game and put it onto your phone! Finally, Microsoft have now also shown off their new version of Windows 8 which has a RADICAL departure from the classic look and feel we know, but everyone who has used and worked with the beta version have raved about its user interface as well as its performance. What Microsoft have said that has been over looked is that their vision for the future is to create one operating system for pc, laptop, phone, tablet and any device basically. Windows 8 could potentially be that step. Here is a video of Microsoft’s vision of the future http://www.microsoft.com/office/vision/ I personally do not think that it is that far into the future, some of the items in this video are already available. One additional point that you need to know is that you can now download Skype from Microsoft. After Microsoft bought Skype for $8.6 billion, they have finally been approved by the competition commission to use Skype in their business. Now the exciting task will begin of integrating this medium ion all the Microsoft Software. This is not just going to be another piece of software, I believe that this could bring in a new era of communication that now will include Microsoft in the same arena as the big cellular providers around the world. If you add in the new Office 365 offering where any company can by a full suite of office products on a monthly subscription without the IT department overheads, and have this available on mobile phone, tablet and pc no matter which operating system you are using, I am making the announcement right now that in the next 5 years we are going to have one of the most radical changes to how people interface with machines than we have ever seen before.
Will Microsoft be leading the way, maybe, but there are others like Ubuntu who have already got services and interfaces that already do some of this stuff and do it for almost free. You also have Google who have recently released a 1GB per second internet service in California. They are also funding alternative energy source companies and projects around the world, as well as finding ways to use free air space (like the empty space between TV channels or radio stations,) to transport data. IBM have been creating processors that are able work almost like the human mind, and some new processors that are 4 times the capacity of the traditional silicon version, but with half the heat. In the UK there is a project under way that has created a computer the size of your wallet.
I have said all of this to say, there is so much information flying around us, that we almost need a moment to think for ourselves. That is why I believe that sitting down with my Bible every day for a while, allows me to become peaceful and quiet. This is the best way to get the truth from the Father of all Truth, God Almighty. Without His help, none of this would be possible. Once I have spent time with Him and Jesus, then I am able to take on all this information with the right path to follow, instead of being led by my nose or what the latest trend is.
